As material technologies improve, Weta Workshop revisits characters and brings more to their interpretation than was previously possible. The King of the Dead is Weta's first time fully utilizing these technologies: completely transparent resins, a skull behind the skin of his face, improved 3D printing techniques… Weta Workshop felt the need to revisit the King of the Dead and showcase him not just as a physical being, but an ethereal one, much like he appeared on screen. Wētā Workshop was intrinsically involved in the design and physical effects manufacture for all three films of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
